Mental Health Check

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Minorities are less likely to receive diagnosis and treatment for their mental illness, have less access to mental health services and often receive a poorer quality of mental health care. With COVID-19, the injustices of African Americans, and the unpredictable nature of life there’s an increase need for everyone to check in on their mental health.

Before quarantine, I had monthly sessions with my therapist and felt like I had my mental health in check. During my first virtual session in March, I remember feeling optimistic about my time at home. “I finally can deep clean , complete some projects at home, and catch up on rest”.

However, after a month of being at home alone I noticed I was having crying spells , feeling of exhaustion, loneliness, and anxiety. Everyday was feeling like Groundhogs Day and my moods were up and down. I wanted to get away but felt mentally trapped. Since, quarantine I have increased my therapy sessions to bi-weekly.

Your mental health matters and I have included some resources below. Please note these resources can help you find a therapist if needed.
